1. Preparation

  • Light sanding → use 180–220 grit, very lightly. Veneer is thin (0.6mm typical), so don’t over-sand.
  • Clean → wipe with tack cloth or microfiber to remove dust.

2. Sealing (recommended)

  • Apply one thin coat of diluted finish or sanding sealer to the back and edges of the panel.
  • This prevents uneven moisture absorption → reduces risk of warping.

3. First Oil Coat (to “wet” the grain)

  • Choose your finish:
    • Danish Oil → classic, easy, satin look.
    • Hardwax Oil (e.g. Osmo, Rubio) → more durable, matte/satin modern look.
  • Apply with a lint-free cloth or brush.
  • Wipe in direction of grain.
  • Let it soak 10–15 minutes, then wipe off excess.
  • Allow to dry 6–12 hours.

4. Build up Finish

  • Lightly de-nib with 320 grit or Scotch pad between coats.
  • Apply 2–3 coats total for oil, or 2 coats of hardwax.
  • Each coat deepens the colour and adds protection.

5. Optional Staining (to make it darker)

  • Before first oil coat, apply a thin walnut stain.
  • Wipe off evenly.
  • Test on offcut first → stains penetrate quickly on veneer.

6. Final Buffing

  • After last coat has cured (24–48 hrs), buff with a clean cloth or pad.
  • Optional: apply a thin layer of furniture wax for extra smoothness.

7. Installing Veneer Panels onto Plasterboard

  1. Wall prep → lightly sand glossy paint on plasterboard, clean surface.
  1. Apply adhesive → zig-zag “S” beads + perimeter bead on back of panel.
  1. Position panel → carefully align, press firmly onto wall.
  1. Temporary fix → use spacers or hidden brads until adhesive cures.
  1. Expansion gap → leave 2–3mm at edges, cover with trim/skirting.
