🛠️ Tools & Materials You’ll Need

Materials

  • Emulsion paint (for both mist coat and topcoat)
  • Water (to mix into the mist coat)
  • (Optional) Plaster‑specific primer or primer‑undercoat instead of mist coat

Tools

  • Paint stirrer – mix paint and check consistency
  • Paint roller and tray – for quicker application
  • Paintbrush – for cutting in edges and corners
  • Dust sheets or plastic sheeting – to protect surfaces during painting
  • Masking tape – for clean lines around edges and fixtures (recommended from general painting guides)

Safety & Protection

  • Floor and furniture protection via dust sheets
  • Gloves if using cleaning or primer solutions (referenced in related prep guides)

Step by Step

1. Let the plaster fully dry

  • Do not paint until the plaster is completely dry.
  • Signs it’s dry include:
    • Dark patches have disappeared.
    • The entire wall has turned a pale, light pink or grey.
    • Drying often takes at least one week, sometimes longer depending on humidity and temperature .

2. Mix a “mist coat”

  • New plaster is porous, so plain paint will soak in and lead to uneven finish or flaking.
  • Mist coat recipe: 2 parts emulsion paint + 1 part water (e.g. mix 2 L paint with 1 L water).
  • Choose a pale colour close to your final shade .

3. Apply the mist coat

  • Protect floors and furniture (use dust sheets or plastic).
  • You can use either a roller or paintbrush:
    • Roller = faster but messier,
    • Brush = better control along edges and corners.
  • Apply evenly; a second mist coat is optional if necessary .

4. Apply the topcoat

  • Once the mist coat has fully dried (usually ~24 hours but check conditions), apply your normal paint for the final finish.
  • Follow the paint manufacturer’s drying and recoating instructions carefully .
