1. Remove Old Fillet
- Chip out cracked or loose fillet material until you reach solid concrete.
- Brush away all dust and debris.
2. Prepare Surface
- Lightly spray/dampen the area with clean water so it doesn’t suck moisture out of the fresh mortar.
3. Mix Mortar
- Mix 4 parts sharp sand : 1 part cement.
- Add water gradually until it’s workable (not sloppy).
- Stir in waterproofing admixture (SBR or waterproofer/plasticiser) according to instructions.
4. Apply New Fillet
- Press mortar firmly into place at the wall base.
- Shape it into a neat sloping edge away from the wall to shed water.
- Smooth the surface with your trowel.
5. Curing
- Mortar needs at least 24–48 hours before it hardens enough to resist rain.
- Full curing takes about 7 days (it keeps gaining strength up to 28 days).
- During curing:
- Mist it with water daily, or
- Cover with plastic sheet or damp cloth to stop it drying out too quickly.
- Keep it shaded if possible (avoid hot sun or frost).
6. Waterproof Coat
- Once fully cured (after ~7 days), apply a coat of
- bitumen paint (which cannot be painted over)
- OR
- cementitious tanking slurry (which can be painted over) for additional waterproofing.
- Full curing takes about 7 days
7. Exterior Masonry Paint
- Prime with a exterior/masonry primer.
- Paint with exterior masonry paint for colour and UV protection.
